As the only republic to ever sucessfully suceed from the Communist USSR, the Fins had a long history of improving Soviet small arms. The AK is just one more case. The Valmet M-62 was the first semiauto "AK" to enter the US, imported by the now defunt Interarms ca'71 as I recall. The machine work, especially the bolt head is of jewel like quality. The Valmets were the base for the Isreali Galil which they claimed was the world's best Assualt rifle. I do not disagree. Unfortunately those idots have cut them up and sold them for scrap in the US. We have however benfitted from their stupidity since Century Arms is using the parts to produce a semi Sporter Galil for sale in the US. Isreali's loss is America's gain.
